When I want an alias, I usually want it with the same name as the original, just in a different place. To do this, I have to (1) select the icon; (2) choose "Make Alias"; (3) drag the alias to its new location; (4) edit the alias's name to take out the extension "alias." This is a pain.
Easy Alias makes it easy to create an alias with the same name as the original file.
Requires System 7.
To use:
1. Place Easy Alias on your desktop, or wherever you can get to it easily.
2. Drag-drop any file onto Easy Alias. In a few seconds, an alias of your file will be created next to the easy Alias icon. You can then put the alias wherever you want it.
Is that easy, or what?
Notes:
1. Easy Alias can't make aliases of folders, sorry. Also, it only handles one file at a time (potential improvement).
2. If you double-click Easy Alias instead of drag-dropping, you can choose a file to alias via the get-file dialog.
3. The alias is put to the right of Easy Alias. If that would be off the screen, then it's placed below (if no room on screen below, then above). HOWEVER, Easy Alias doesn't check whether there's another icon in the way, so the alias icon could be placed on top of another icon. This is harmless, but cosmetically incorrect.
4. If Easy Alias encounters a problem (such as a duplicate file name), it beeps and quits without making the alias. It delays 60 ticks before quitting, so if your beep sound is longer than 1 second (God forbid!), it will get cut off in the middle.
